Tuesday evening Friends of FAMU hosted their 3rd annual happy hour fundraiser in Atlanta, Georgia.

This organization was formed by a board of passionate FAMU alumni who are committed to providing mentorship and direct financial assistance in the form of scholarships to deserving enrolled FAMU students from the Atlanta metropolitan area.FAMU University is located in Tallahassee, Fl. This organization provides scholarships, workshops and assigns each child that’s attending FAMU from Atlanta with a mentor throughout their entire career college journey.

Many people may ask why do FAMU students need mentors or financial help? Like 85 percent of all freshman’s entering college for the first time they are usually the first in their family to go to college in their family. These students arrive at school already facing social, economic, and careers disadvantages because their often times done know.

Every year Friends of FAMU rents out a local venue to host their happy hour fundraiser event, they set a goal of $7000 but often times raise more money than they expected. On this particular night anticipated to reach a goal of $5,000.Lakeisha c/o 2006 said, “We did the fundraiser a little different this go-round because we know everyone doesn’t have it “. Tiers were created and broken up into different categories that were budget friendly.

Tier 1 : $10-$50

Tier 2:$50-200

Tier 3: $300-$1000

Tier 4: $1,000-up

Statistics state that the average giving seed from alumni who graduated from HBCUs is 5%. The reasoning behind these low percentages is some alumni are still currently in the process of paying back their student loans or haven’t found a job with a large salary.

“As an alumnus of another HBCU, I must say this event brought a lot of alumni together to raise money for a great cause.” Alvin Jones graduates from Morehouse College. This event was sponsored but different liquor companies who helped match the money that was raised from this event.
