Since Malik Yoba decided to speak out on his attraction to transgender females just over a month ago, he has received numerous death threats, lost endorsement deals and discredited from his organization. In today’s society being true to yourself seems to be everyone’s motto but it doesn’t always have the outcome one is hoping for. In the African American community is a young black gay male is looked at being an embarrassment to your family, being told that’s not a way for a man to carry themselves and having bible quotes being thrown at you because of who you love.
In Philadelphia an African American straight male committed suicide because he was being teased by members in his community for his relationship with a transgender female, he was approached on a daily basis and often got into physical altercations because he had to define himself.
"Nowadays you don’t really know who was born a female or who are taking hormones to turn into a women, I know I’ve seen some sexy ladies on social media and when I find you they use to be men I feel bad and disgusted that I fell for them because I’m not gay", said Nasir of Philadelphia.
Can the African American community and churches ever come to grips that it’s okay to be attracted to a transgender woman, be a strong black gay man and be that role model and family man that they are known to be.
